When Lyndon B. Johnson succeeded the presidency after John F. Kennedys assassination he spoke of his vision of a Great Society in America. This Great Society included an end to poverty and racial injustice, and also was intended to turn America into a place where kids can enhance their mind, broaden their talents, and people could restore their connection with the environment. In order to reach his goal, LBJ enacted numerous proposals involving taxes, civil rights, poverty, and much more. For the most part Johnson did an excellent job on delivering his promises, but international affairs threatened the Great Society and although LBJ won the presidency in a landslide victory in 1964, by 1966 he and the Supreme Court began to face†¦show more content†¦One of his major accomplishments he during this time was a War on Poverty. Johnson believed that the cure to poverty was education and therefore passed numerous acts providing federal aid for education. The Elementary and Second ary Education Act was the first general federal-aid-to-education law in American history and gave over $1 billion to public and parochial schools for books, library supplies, and special-education courses. The Higher Education Act gave $650 million for scholarships and low-interest loans to poor college students and for funds for college libraries and research facilities. Also, through the Economic Opportunity Act Johnson started antipoverty programs such as the Job Corps, VISTA, Project Head Start, and the Community Action Program. However, these programs were designed by Johnson to be a ?hand up, not a hand out.? In addition to helping the poor in America by providing money to further education, Johnson proposed acts providing medical insurance and housing facilities. The Medical Care Act created Medicare which provides medical insurance to the elderly and Medicaid which provides free healthcare for welfare recipients. The Omnibus Housing Act gave almost $8 billion for low- and mi ddle-income housing and rent supplies for low-income families. He is rich, madly in love, and willing to do anything to get what he wants; he is Lucentio. Lucentio is one of the main characters of Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew. His role in the play begins as he arrives in Padua, Italy as a rich student with the intent of furthering his education at a university in Padua. Mind you, Lucentio is accompanied by his servant Tranio who reminds him to enjoy life and not to exclusively focus on his studies. However, this conversation is abruptly interrupted by a boisterous crowd containing Baptista Minola and his alluring daughter Bianca. Upon seeing Bianca, Lucentio proclaims, â€Å"Tranio, I burn, I pine, I perish, Tranio, if I achieve not this young modest girl. (Act 1, Scene 1)† This ultimately leads†¦show more content†¦Withal, Lucentio does not even wish to have an extravagant wedding despite the fact that both his family and Bianca’s family are immensely rich. In spite of his need to disguise himself, Lucent io remains in his true character even as Cambio. In truth, Lucentio is so confident in his abilities to woo Bianca he does not even mind that Tranio, disguised as Lucentio, is promising the wealth of Vincentio, Lucentio’s father, to Baptista. However, this does pose an even larger problem for Lucentio as Tranio refuses to give up his act as Lucentio, and when the true Vincentio arrives in Padua he accuses him of being an imposter. Tranio furthers this by calling the authentic Vincentio a rich antiquated madman while Pedant still claims to be Vincentio which makes Lucentio’s father even angrier. Thankfully, Biondello, Lucentio’s other servant, brings Lucentio and Bianca to the scene to clear things up. Once Baptista learns of how Tranio deceived him, he is livid, yet he still supports the love that Bianca and Lucentio share. So, even in the eyes of characters that could have easily disliked Lucentio, he still remains well liked among all other characters includin g the rival suitors.
